Yes. I pass by every morning. I go into the space. Close the windows. Wake up
Adrian. We have coffee. Then I go to work.

I'm just going by what we do at home: open windows at night to circulate the
cooler air; close windows and curtains during the day.

On the other hand, if enough people are willing to chip in to pay to have it on
all the time, that's awesome, and obviously a lot simpler. Does anyone have an
estimate of how much this will be?

We might want to look into curtains though - it's possible that better curtains
would help reduce the heat that gets absorbed.

Tl;dr air conditioning needs to be left on to work.

Didn't we do this discussion to death last summer. We are either going to try
to air condition the space (which I fully support) or we're not. If we are
going to use the air conditioner then it should be set to a reasonable temp
(say 25) and alowed to cycle on and off as required. Walking into a 35+ deg
space and running the a/c for 2 hours is a waste because it will have almost no
effect on the temperature, for this reason I think a timer is the wrong
solution. If we are going to try to open windows at night and close them again
first thing in the morning (that second part is imperative) then we want to
turn off the a/c at night and back on in the morning. For this I think a set
back thermostat would work best.

Isn't the problem we had that someone set the thermostat too low and left it
that way, so it got way too cold in the space. If the space was already a
comfortable temp when people walked in they wouldn't mess with thermostat.

As far as cost, I'm willing to donate towords the power bill in order to have a
comfortable and usable space. Anyone else?

However, if the inside temperature of the space climbed to 35+ degrees; than
the A/C may have come on “all by itself”.

I took a quick look at it yesterday. What we have right now is a pretty
old-school mercury thermostat. It's dead simple to change the wires around
(screws not solder).

This week I'll pick up one of these:
http://www.intermatic.com/Products/Timers/InWallTimers/Springwound_Auto-Off_Timers/FFCommercialSeries/FF6H.aspx
and wire it up in series with the thermostat. It looks like I should be able to
do it without so much as cutting or soldering existing wires. It won't cost
more that $25 and will keep us from running the AC longer then we mean to.

Although I do have one I’m not using. I prefer my analogue mercury switch.

Does anyone have a spare electronic thermostat kicking around? It shouldn't be
too much work to switch out the old analogue one with a digital one with timer
function.

As for automating turning it off, I assume that the temperature is set
with a little lever. If so, we could mount a servo under it that
knocks it to a higher temp setting at around 9:30 or so, then get sout
of the way again. If the a/c is already off, nothing happens. No need
to automatically turn it on as the servo would be out of the way in
the morning for the next person to use the thermostat.

This would be a fun little into to electronics project someone could
tackle at the next circuit night.
