Could be on to something here. Every time I've started SS so far it's been from the launch icon, i.e. "C:\Program Files\SlimServer\SlimServer.exe". I just did your test, which involves starting slim.exe from the command line as a service. In the DOS window I could see the initialisation, then it whizzed through my library in a few seconds. SoftSqueeze was responsive the whole time. I can now navigate to localhost:9000 and everything's working 100% fine.
