Thanks for brilliant quick comeback - found the problem - had to tell Slimserver that its music folder was where iTunes keeps it's database (the 'xml' file) then I got the 'use iTunes' switch' without which not much happens with iTunes - doh!!! (should have read the FAQ that came with Slimserver first really...:-)
