I think you have the relationship backward, this did not arise from apps. Long before there was any such thing as an "app", and ever since for that matter, most music was released by artists in the form of albums, with tracks. Such an approach still logically organizes and describes the vast, vast majority of most people's music collections. As far as the desired behavior, of course a default hierarchy and database organization can be or not be whatever is chosen.
