It only knows that 7.6 exists because there is something telling it
that it exists. You never got messages before updating to 7.6 before
the release, right? So,

1) delete everything having to do with 7.5.x and 7.6 from your system.
Assuming you're still using Ubuntu, doing only "apt-get purge
squeezeboxserver" may not be enough. After apt-get purging, then dig
into the /var/lib/squeezeboxserver , /etc/squeezeboxserver, etc to
thoroughly clean it out.

2) when you re-install SBS, turn off the automatic notification of
software update before you do anything else

3) never, ever, ever connect to mysqueezebox.com.

That should give you a fighting chance.
