please ignore my ignorance... would it not be better for a prototype to assemble such player from already available parts: a RpI or alike board, one of those A-sync USB to SP/DIF pcb's like that one from WaveIO (just to name one). Optionally a DAC. For operation, if the UI stays simple a LCD and a rotary encoder could be attached to the GPIO lines.
At least that is what I'm looking at for myself, as a hobby project, basically the main part missing (in my case) is some code to communicate with LMS about players status and command and code to display info and react to rotary encoder or IR input. A more integrated approach, like attaching a DAC directly to the I2S bus (if the SoC provides) will involve some serious linux kernel hacking.
