I have seen cases of USB key sudden death upon power loss that I assume
were due to the way flash memory performs writes. Also cases where the
medium turns read-only, irreversibly. (a quickly googled 'paper'

related to the subject)

If running the SD in read-only mode is the best way to ensure u-boot
remains available, player preferences (not to mention elaborate software
add-ons that could run on the player) still need to be written
somewhere. Perhaps the software people want to have a say on how the
board is powered (capacitor size, battery backup) to allow for safe
enough write operations?
