Yes, the SOtM sMS-1000 is more in the price range of the Transporter.
I found the SOtM sMS-100 on eBay for EUR 499 and you would also need a
reasonably cheap USB DAC for additionally EUR 50-100 to make it play
some music, so it gets a bit more expensive than a Squeezebox Touch and
it's a bit harder to get since it's not available in your local store
and it's going to look more ugly since you need two boxes with a cable
in-between, but other than that I guess it would work.
