I'm unclear on whether your friends already have a stereo or powered speakers to use with LMS. If so, setting up a Raspberry Pi server/player and controlling via mobile device is the way to go. If not, I'd take a closer look at Sonos.
A pair of Sonos One can be configured for stereo or set up in different rooms as needed. Same mobile control and no server necessary. If your friends subscribe to Amazon Prime, Sonos will play the included Amazon Music service.
