I can't use CUE files or ogg as I want my music collection to work on my phone's mpeg player, and in my car's, etc., and anyway I don't think I could stand re-ripping all my music (shudder). Stripping off the silence at playback time certainly works in practice - I've had Winamp set up to do this for years now to good effect.
