But without doing the above test you can't really know if the URL itself is wrong or if there's something about the WMA stream that's confusing the WMA decoding code in the SB2/SB3 firmware.

Sorry, I should have read a bit further; it sounds like you've done this already and have a URL that's playable via the command line, though (for whatever reason) not yet by the firmware-based WMA decoder in the SB2/SB3. (I'm assuming the reason it works for Softsqueeze is that Softsqueeze doesn't advertise itself as being able to decode WMA streams directly, so the server decodes via wmadec [I think] and reencodes into either a FLAC or an MP3 stream for Softsqueeze to play.)
