Why did they use a web interface, btw?
I can't speak for Sean or Dean, but there's at least one huge advantage: cross-platform. Another one would be (relative) ease of customization: there are skins optimized for handhelds, tablets as the Nokia 770, PCs.
BTW: I was looking for a web based music manager when I came across Slimserver. Buying the first device (SliMP3!) came quite a bit later.
