Where should I look further? I am assuming at this stage that it will be in the handling of the tags and I should therefore look at the tags in more detail – which I will!
Look and see if you have APEv2 tags in your MP3 file that specify the ARTISTSORT. You can use mp3tag to look at the APEv2 tags:
http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html.
Either that or a TSOA id3v2 tag (which tag&rename doesn't support as far as I know nor does mp3tag). You can view all the tags using a command line tool like id3v2 on Linux. I don't know of a tool that will set the TSOA tag except for musicbrainz.org's tagger.
