Progress => Just wiped off 6.5.1 + deleted plugins. Clean install of 6.5.0
Result => sound of a striking match at the start of each track is cured! Conclusion => there is a serious problem with 6.5.1 and possibly a minor problem with 6.5.0 (in that some people get it occassionally with this verion too?)
