Hrrm. I would tend to (especially since I have had my share of HDD failures) suspect the HDD is dying. Perhaps it is trying desperately to recover from an error and stalling the USB interface. USB doesn't have the same error reporting as ATA type drives so it may just be "oops, sorry, failed" giving a generic error message.
