Now we are getting somewhere. Thanks for the idea of running slim.exe from the command line. The error I get is:
"ERROR: There is already another copy of the SlimServer running on this machine. <Unknown error>" I checked the list of processes in Windows Task Manager, and there is not any other copy of slim anything running as far as it is concerned. So, there must be a token that slimserver checks for to see if it is running.
