This whole energy consumption thing is getting so ridiculous! The press runs stories that make you feel guilty about your 5W energy consumption while the guy who runs the media empire is flying off to dinner in Paris on his private jet.
Try to acquire some sense of proportion. In the overall scheme of things 5W is nothing. It is so small it is even undetectable on your own electric bill. If you want to save the world, focus your personal energy where it will do some good. When tackling any large problem you have to analyze it and figure out an approach that gets the biggest impact with the least cost/effort. Why devote energy to saving 5W when a similar expenditure of personal effort may save 5 Megawatts? Think BIG, not small. For example, instead of posting messages on audio forums about saving 5W, post messages to your congressmen and senators about the big problems in the world. Organize groups of people to do the same. The effort is the same but the effect is potentially much larger.
