I had to buy a new router when I first tried to connect my Nintendo Wii to
the internet. I guess you could say that I was unlucky in that respect, but
I really didn't fault the Wii because I know that wireless networking is a
constantly moving standard. Device interoperability is a very difficult
thing to ensure. Since I upgraded my router (incidentally, a Linksys
WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware) the performance of every wireless device on my
network has improved.

By the way, I think over the past 5-6 years of wireless networking that I've
had 5 different routers. The router is much cheaper than a Wii or a Duet or
a laptop or pretty much any device that we actually use, so I would rather
replace that. And the one positive note is that in general wireless
networking is improving and getting easier to use.
