I think what happened here was that Dirk could have phrased his reply more gently, and Spaced Girl reacted understandably to the apparent rudeness. Maybe there should be a 'community guidelines' document which says something like "please go out of your way to be helpful and polite, especially to people who have just joined the list". I'm thinking that should be a different document from the CoC, because the CoC is (presumably deliberately) couched in formal language, and it would be odd to mix a gentle "please be friendly" with that kind of language.
