You made the interesting comment at one point that you had mirrored disks on each of the systems. Why can't you use just one disk for booting, and the other as a local cache for compressed images? Boot up in PXE, get config over the network, see which image to install, check local cache, then install from cache or net? I don't see what RAID1 brings you, unless that's part of the training curiculum in some classes, in whcih case my idea won't work.
