I am remembering being part of a relativly recent discussion on the reliability (or lack of it) of datacenter power (even when UPSs and generators are involved), but a scan of the subject lines over the last year isn't finding it.
does anyone else remember the discussion and can point me at it? I also think that a summary of that discussion would be something that would be useful as a formal writeup IIRC the conclusion was that no matter how you setup redundant power, UPSs, and generators you will still have cases where boxes loose power unexpectedly, and so you have to plan for this.
