David, I suspect that the issue here isn't just accessibility. If Larry needs this for newsgroups for his classes with SSL support it is probably because it will be used for receiving and submitting assignments in secure fashion from students. I thought of tin, but I'm not sure how the secure aspect would work running in terminal. Is there any ssh or sftp equivalent mode of interaction there?
