John. So good, so refreshing to hear the voice of common sense! If
people prefer JFW, then let them live in their own little worlds.
It's probably a safe bet that many of them haven't even taken the
time or trouble to get a play with a Mac. Most of them are probably
just yelling about VoiceOver this, JFW that and Windows the other
based purely on hear-say and missinformation. You and I have
discussed these issues elsewhere. And it seems that we think very
much along the same lines. I guess all we can do is hope that one
day, people will realise just how much they're missing. I bought my
first Mac in 2005 after doing exactly what I'm advocating. I went
and played with a friend's Mac. He wasn't even aware that VO
existed, being a visual user himself and he nearly caused his wife to
have to do an extra load of washing when his Mac suddenly began to
speak to him, <LOL>. Nowadays, I use the Mac for well over 95% of
the things I need to do in my day-to-day computing life. Just a few
hours ago I recorded an audio demo of some products using VO and the
very excellent Sound Studio software. I was able to record that demo
while opening other windows, using other software on the same
machine, with absolutely no interaction between my work and Sound
Studio which just did its stuff in the background. Try doing that
with Windows, see how far you get! There is no doubt that VO still
has room for improvement. That accessibility of applications still
has a long way to go before it is universal. But for me personally,
the software base is now sufficiently strong to allow me to manage
what I need without running back to the Windows box all the time.
Sure, Windows is nice to have occationally. I still find some
dificult web pages which VO simply refuses to handle properly. On
those occasions I need to use Windows. But hopefully that situation
will improve shortly.

Lol. That mentality is a microcosm of Windows users thinking
about the Mac in many instances. They think they have it better and
are content with crashes, viruses and all that good stuff, claiming
the Mac is dying, is a toy or there is no software out there for it.
It's amazing how some folks get so rooted in something to the point
in which they will make things so hard on themselves needlessly.
In regard to JFW and WE, I also can't figure out that mystery.
I used JAWS for a while, but will never go back beyond the occasional
use to keep myself familiar with it. Window-Eyes is a superior
product, and Freedom Science Fiction continues to drive JFW into the
ground as affectively as a ranting Bill Gates is doing the same to
Windows' credibility.
