My D.E.S. Counsellor for the Blind and Visually Impaired saw my iMac
G4 running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and was highly impressed. I gave her a
brief demo and she said she thought it might be a viable alternative
to the clients she is helping. I told her that Voc Rehab is pushing
PCs with JAWS and ZoomText but those of us who are working on our own
and/or retired cannot afford the expenses; so, some of us, like me,
are going to the Mac and are delighted. Also, VoiceOver comes with the
operating system starting with OS 10.4 Tiger. Also, the speech does
not have to be shut down for doing other things, like on my old PC, as
I would never have enough RAM and, besides, VoiceOver is part of the
operating system on the Mac. I did this with her back in 2005, just
after I upgraded my Mac OS X 10.3 Panther so as to be able to have the
speech. She said she would see what she could do to consider it as an
alternative to PCs to some of her clients. So, little by little, one
person at a time [me with my Counsellor], perhaps, can get more and
more people considering the Mac.
