On the contrary, there are standards for speech synthesis. No one really uses hardware synths anymore, but for software synthesizers, there are indeed standards in place. Under Windows it is SAPI, and under Mac it is the Apple Speech Engine. This is what allows so many synths to be used with Window-Eyess, Jaws, or VoiceOver on their respective platforms. Standards are a beautiful thing.
