Hello!
iTunes always knows the location of its libraries, unless YOU moved
them or renamed folders, etc. Therefore, the ONLY time you would ever
get this dialog is when YOU have the OPTION key pressed while iTunes
is starting up. Even the very first time you start iTunes, it creates
a default library so you will not get this dialog!
In his original message, he said "This dialog wanting me to select an
existing library or create a new
library came up in i-tunes. Figuring since I hadn't done that
before..." He obviously had no intention of requesting this
dialog... Therefore, he must have held down the OPTION key (or,
more likely, the VO keys).
I should point out that I think this is a great feature, one that I
use, especially when I want to select music from my "Christmas
Library." The bug comes in to play because holding down both the
Control and Option keys while iTunes is starting up should not have
the same affect as holding down just the Option key.
Lou.

I've no doubt this may be an issue but for the life of me, why would
people hold down the option key or the VO keys when starting Itunes
anyway? I mean for example, there are other ways of starting Itunes
rather than pressing vo-space, you could for example press coomand-o
to start itunes or command-down arrow.
I was not aware of the dialog coming up allowing the choosing of a
library when the option key was held down when starting Itunes but to
be fair, I don't know whehter I'd call that a bug because such a
feature or function is damn handy if your library has changed
location etc.
To get back to the orginal point of this threat, the problem was as I
recall that Itunes couldn't find a library to work with when it
started and was therefore prompting the user to create a new library
or choose an existing one, that's default behavior from Itunes if it
cannot find a library to work with.

Hi Lou, Dane, and others,
I agree that this "feature" of interpreting that users who hold down
the VO keys (Control and OPTION) when starting iTunes want
to be prompted to select (or create a new) iTunes library -- the
same behavior they can select by holding down the OPTION
key when starting iTunes -- is a bug, and I've reported it. In the
meantime users should either quickly release VO keys as Lou
suggests, or select your current iTunes library in response to
the unwanted dialogue box (or quit and relaunch iTunes with
a quicker release of the VO keys). Using VO keys lockdown
and starting iTunes will also escape this as Lou stated.
The current version of iTunes fixes the second bug Lou mentions
-- where you get prompted for import location if you press the
"import CD" button while using the VO keys. This button now
imports without prompts (whether or not you hold down the
option key).
Are there other applications where pressing VO keys is
interpreted as holding down the option key on launch?
Cheers,
Esther
This is a good time to remind all VO users of the iTunes "feature"
that can unwittingly bring up the dialog box mentioned. According to
the iTunes help, if you hold down the OPTION key while iTunes is
being opened, you will get a dialog box that will prompt you to
create a new iTunes library or select a different iTunes library.
VO users can unintentionally get this dialog if you are holding down
the VO keys (Control and OPTION) while opening iTunes. So, to avoid
this from happening, release the VO keys as soon as you launch
iTunes. If you get the dialog box, you can either select the iTunes
library, or, as I prefer, click the "Quit" button and relaunch iTunes
and remebering to release the VO keys quickly.
You can also get this dialog if you hold down the VO keys while
clicking the "Import" button.
It should also be pointed out that if you "Enable Control Option
Lock" and then launch iTunes, this dialog will not appear. Obviously,
iTunes is checking to see if the OPTION key is physically pressed...
It should also be checking to see if the Control key is physically
pressed... And, since it is not, I would consider this a bug. Maybe
somebody could report it?
Hope this helps...
Lou.

This dialog wanting me to select an existing library or create a new
library came up in i-tunes. Figuring since I hadn't done that
before it
would be safe to create a new library I hit the create new
button. So
i-tunes was busy for awhile. I manage to move the cursor around on
the
screen to check it out to find out what had happened and I think
found a
check box unchecked whatever that means and a save button and
later on
i-tunes1 which I'd guess is the new proposed name for this library.
Tabbing around on the screen to get to the save button just tells me
repeatedly that i-tunes is busy and only stopping tabbing around
tells me
i-tunes is no longer busy. Accessibility user interface leaves
stuff to
be desired. What should I do to clear this situation and perhaps get
to a
better situation with i-tunes now?
