they are not one in the same.  you cannot plug the chord into the system 
unless you plug it into the brick.

They are one in the same. One is a cord that goes into the adapter
slot and the small piece can be connected for shorter distances. Only
one can be connected to the adapter at a time and one slides out so
the other can replace it.
