To add to what Simon has already said, you can also navigate to the
file in Finder, use command C or the menu option to copy it, and then
paste it into your message as you compose it. I find this way to be
much, much faster...

As for spell checking in text edit, I have no experience of it yet.
I haven't had the time to explore it, having been a mac user for
only a couple of months.
