I can't think of a reason why Mail is behaving the way it is for you.
What I usually do is to hilight the collapsed row. Then, when I press
enter to open it, it will open several windows (one per message within
the thread). The window I am then placed in is the oldest message.
As I either close or delete the message (command+w to close the window
or the delete key to delete the message), I am moved to the next in
the thread. This is quite nice unless the thread has many messages.
Mail will warn you in this case and ask if you are sure you want to
open, for example, 11 messages (each opening in its own window). I
have my messages sort by date received. Thus far, it has been from
oldest to newest in the messages table. I haven't paid attention to
what happens when I expand a thread within the messages table because
I always find opening the collapsed row more convenient.
