almost reluctant to type highlighting problems

OK now what i am trying to do is open my home folder  then go to  
download folder.  i open this, ow here's where things go wrong. i now  
have about 12  folders in this folder these are the folders i wish to  
select. i am now on the first folder and it says that it's  
highlighted, all's well up to now, so i turn off curser tracking as  
directed. i now interact with the list of folders   i arrow down to  
say the third folder and press VO plus command  and then hit space it  
says nothing , isn't this where it should say either highlighted or  
not? any how i carry on selecting at random i.e. folders from the list  
and pressing VO command plus space  the best i can still get is 2  
folders, sorry for the long explanation hope someone can make  
something of this.
 i am sorry for keeping this going but am really at a loss  oh  yes  
if it's any use i am using a Mac book, but i'm sure it won't make a  
difference.
