m4a is mpeg 1 layer 4 as opposed to mpeg 1 layer 3 which is mp3. m4a is essentially the equivalent of AAC, Apple's higher-guality compression format. Many older players will not play m4a. Newer systems would have a better chance of compatibility. To be on the safe side, the overwhelming majority of players support mp3.

Listers what exactly is a .m4a audio file? Is it the same as a .mp3 file? Do I need to convert these to .mp3 files for most non computer CD players like car stereos and such?
