May I solve this issue for you kind friend.
its a rather simple thing. yahoo messenger and MSN are not voiceover
compatible applications. the simple solution is to discard these
programs and use an application called Adium. it can be found at www.adiumx.com
it is a free download and under constant development as it is a
living application. there is only one draw back. this is that there is
no audio chat or conference support. so as another application to use
with your system I highly advise you have an acount setup with skype.
sorrry lol dont mean to confuse you lol what I mean is download the
latest version of skype for mac and create yourself a skype name etc.
the system is accessible with voiceover.
hope this is of assistance.
oh and by the way a great feature. Adium can have multiple active
accounts running. say AOL messenger account, Yahoo, MSN and others. so
you're covered on all bases.
have fun and get to know this application.
strong note of information: voiceover support is rather decent but
making the application work effectively for you requires a little
knowledge to get the application doing what you want it to do. mainly
things like event and dialogue notifications and chat announcements.
yes this is all supported

I just got my first Mac about a month ago, and just downloaded
Messenger for Mac. Come to find out that I am unable to read
conversations, or see my contacts. Is there a special key stroke to
work with Messenger?
Note it's still in Beta. Do you have the latest Beta?
http://messenger.yahoo.com/mac.php
Also, are you on Tiger or Leopard?
For contacts, what happens when you switch to the Messenger List
window (Command Backslash) and interact (Shift Control Option Down)
with the table in that window? What do you hear?
For conversations, what happens when you switch to a Message Window
using the Window menu or by cycling through the windows using
Command Backtick, then interact with the HTML content in that
window, using Control Option Right to move through its contents?
What do you hear?
Hope that helps.
