hi folks, Let me say first how much I've enjoyed reading posts from so many tech savvy blind people since subscribing to this list a few weeks ago. I joined the list because I switched from a JAWS-windows environment to a VO-mac one. I find the mac to be a much better built machine: I love not having crashes and enjoy just putting my computer to sleep instead of turning it off and on so much the way I used to on the pc. I do miss certain features of JAWS and am wondering if you all could suggest solutions that I haven't yet found for myself.
1. I see that VO reads text in paragraph chunks when pressing VO+ the arrow keys on a web page. When I stop VO in mid chunk, I don't know of any way to pick up exactly where I left off. I know about the ctrl feature that resumes reading in the subsequent sentence, but this isn't as precise as I'd like. If I want to find the words I have to enter into the text and scroll through word by word from the beginning of the chunk. 2. The way VO reads web pages is decidedly different than JAWS, and sometimes I can't piece together with VO how to interact with the page. For example, I recently used a site called spaceshare.com for carpooling to events, and I couldn't manage to log in to create a new account. I could find on the page the returning users text boxes and the text to enter a new username and password, but I could find no associated text boxes for these itmes. I suspect it has something to do with tables. I get the impression VO doesn't recognize html tables the way JAWS does... 3. Ie-mail a lot in Spanish and Portuguese but VO has no built-in support for these languages. I know there is an upgrade I can buy from a third-party developer, but I hesitate to buy it until I talk to someone who can speak highly of it. Also the languages are sold separately, so for Spanish and Portuguese I'm looking at about $400, and with French it would be $600... is there a cheaper alternative for multiple languages? I will say those tips on the lioncourt site have been extremely handy. They taught how to copy and paste more effectively and adjust the sound on the computer, among other things. Where are these key commands coming from? I didn't find them anywhere online or in the VO built-in help. I'm sure there's still a lot I have to figure out. I'll continue to watch and learn from you guys.
