The short answer is yes you can install it without sighted assistance.
You may need to turn the volume up so you can hear speach by pressing
VO command left or right arrow until you get to volume and press the
up arrow until you get to the volume you need.

I have been really pleased with apple's technical support as I try
to figure out this issue, they have been helpful, they even
dispatched a tech to take a look at the problem... If reinstalling
the operating system doesn't work, I will take my computer to the
local apple store and see if I've got a hard drive issue.
