with my cursors following one another and with the accounts prefs unlocked, 
I do just that.  find the account and click delete.  delete will not show up 
if you pick the rong account.

Dave, what you're going tohave  to do is once you've selected the
account that youwant to remove inthe table, you'll have to put your
mouse on it with VO command f5, if you don'th ave your Mouse and VO
curser following each other,  and click.  I had been in this situation
one time, and I'd emailed apple about it, and they had said they were
looking into it, and that it is a bug.  You should just be able to
select the account in the table, like you can select any item in any
table with VO, but right now that's how you'd do it.
