Hi Erik.
GMail works very well, but first, if you haven't already, you need to
log into your GMail account, navigate to Settings, and under there
somewhere, there are settings for POP/IMAP. Those need to be turned
on before you can access GMail from your Mail client.
On a personal note, I started using GMail a few months ago and love
it. It's nice to have access with Apple Mail as well as access to it
on the go from my mobile phone or some other web browser.
