You need a dial tone to fax as far as I know and Apple sells a little usb 
modem for 49.00 dollars.  There may be others, but I got mine from apple and 
it works fine.

I'm assuming you mean a dialup modem.  I don't have one of those for
the Mac.  Can you recommend a good one?  Can I use Skype, since I have
a Skype out number or is the modem for the purposes of data transfer?
