what does ping again mean?
Ping is tech talk meaning to ask for a response. "Pings" are signals
sent to check network connectivity -- that a computer can be reached
and is responding (and a what data rate). (You can do a "man ping" in
terminal if you want to read the Unix manual page for this.)
why install dirt over dirty?
Scott suggested that if Cara was worried about the disk permissions
reports that she install the combo updater for the system update to
10.5.5. This is a standard piece of advice if you see problems with a
system update after using the default software update. When you run
the software updater, your machine is checked for the minimum update
packages to load to bring you up to date. This usually is all you
need. However, sometimes there's a glitch in the bookkeeping, and you
see problems because there was something you needed that didn't get
put into the incremental update. In that case, loading the larger
"combo" updater will contain everything, and fix the problem.
Hi, Cara,
Let me guess... you just updated to 10.5.5?
Don't be too concerned. My suggestion is as follows:
1. Go to apple and download the combo updater for 10.5.5
2. Install the combo updater.
3. Repair disk permissions.
Hope this explains things.
Cheers,
Esther
