Dear tiffanitsa,
Under Utilities, you have disk utility. In there, find the tab which
says permission repairs. I don't know what it does but it helps to
reconnect various bits and pieces of software in the OS.The various
options in the tab are moe or less clear. Remember though, when you
run it, Voiceover goes very quiet or very slow on you so don't panic,
just leave the application do what it needs. It takes a while.
Best wishes
Simon

Okay, now I feel like an idiot. What is permission repair and how
do I run it?

I'd get the latest update and run permission repair. this might be
related to something else entirely.

I donno why, but lately, Ive been having some very annoying problems
with voiceover. the speech will stop and then restart itself, even
saying "Voiceover On". Then, when I close the lid of the machine and
open it again, it'll either get really slow or really fast. I didn't
do anything major and don't have the latest update. Could it be a
virus or is it some quirk in the machine?
Thanks,
