It is possible to use Draw for diagrams, but it isn't designed for
that purpose in the same sense that Visio is.
Two programs you may want to have a look at:
Dia (for Windows and Linux)
http://www.gnome.org/projects/dia/
Kivio (for Linux)
http://www.koffice.org/kivio/
I think I remember hearing some time ago that someone converted the
Dia graphics library into OpenOffice.org format. I don't have a link
for it, though.

Thanks but I am very aware of dia and it's capability. Kivio is
something new and I'll certainly look into that.
But my main focal question is the ability to perform network discovery
so that a diagram
of a given network be created on a fly.
I be interested to see if anyone on the developement team of openoffice
has given any thoughts to developing
something to that effect. If so where are they now with that development.
