Someone may have beat me to this but you can't have it said enough:

It is FREE to download. Open Source, per se, appears to be slightly different than freeware, but for the end user it has the same effect. No cost to download, no cost to use. Ever. You can register, keep up to date. What the heck. You can download any or all of the consumer releases or even the "developer's builds" which are kind of like beta versions, or "pre-beta" not really geared towards the general public. I use them though. I like them, and because I don't have high "needs" they may still have bugs but I rarely find them.

All that being said, when you run the program you are given an option to register. You are given an option to register LATER. And you are given the option of not registering at all. Any way you look at it, this is a freebie. It sounded to me like the free/open source status was in question upon the demise of Sun Microsystems, but for now it seems like it's not going to happen. Enjoy!
