Same question here, I mean I don't think they learn much about how a car
engine work or how a radio/tv works etc.

So my question would be "Is learning how to program something that is worth
spending the childrens energy/time on, or are there other skills that are
more important"

Personally I suspect there are better things to learn.

My experience is that the quality of programming courses at high school etc
is of a very varied quality. And if there was a "controlled way" of teaching
programming that made it easier to teach programming I'm sure that many
universities would use it already.
