I was thinking that distccd could query a list of potential hosts and maintain the system-wide hosts file. This means distccd has to run on every host even if you don't want that host to be used by others. You'd run distccd locally as the side-wide hosts maintainer only. I think this can already be realized with distccd's --allow option.
