I've previously suggested using SLP for this (and published the server side patch). I still think it is a better idea on very large configurations where you have a range of compilers. Otherwise you need to query every host for its capabilities, which generates n responses per query, where n is the number of volunteers. SLP only generates responses where the host actually matches what you are asking for - you really do want server side filtering, and Rendezvous can't do that.
