Maybe use `|' instead of `!'? Just because that's sort of the way Perl does it and, although I dislike Perl, `|' sounds like the right mnemonic for reading from a program.
If you're gonna use that mnemonic, it would go at the end though, you're reading from the program, not writing to it...
