Now this is weird...
I called support and said exactly "I bought a used SB which you needed
to unlink from the previous owner's account and assign it to Me"

He said no problem, and opened my existing account and changed the MAC
over to the my account.
I looked online and saw it as Squeezebox #2 on the screen with the
correct MAC.

After booting up the "turnkey disabled" message was GONE!
Now it says:
Squeezenetwork
THE PLAYER IS DISABLED. PLEASE CONTACT MYSQUEEZEBOX.COM/SUPPORT].

He had me do a factory reset and upon reboot it was the same problem

Back online I pressed "remote control" AND the window popped up onscreen
showing "Subway IO radio" in the box on the right and music started
playing.
I changed channels on the web remote and it lets me change channels at
will.

BUT, if it touch the handheld remote... i get the player disabled
message.. for 30 seconds but it still plays.
