It's not irrelevant to all translators (which is why it's marked up). If you're in the fortunate position of using the Roman alphabet and not having any local variants of any of the place names, it's still worth doing the once-off copy of the msgids to the msgstr line so that you (and other translators for that locale) can easily tell in the future when any strings have been missed.
