Follow the instructions in the fine manual for the chosen DB engine.

For example, in MySQL, you would do something like this:

> $ python manage.py dbshell
Reading table information for completion of table and column names
You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A

Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 1141127
Server version: 5.0.51a FreeBSD port: mysql-server-5.0.51a

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the current input statement.

mysql> ALTER TABLE foo_email ADD emailladdress VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL DEFAULT '';
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.04 sec)
Records: 0  Duplicates: 0  Warnings: 0

mysql>

There are also schema migration utilities out there that will do that
in a more managed manner, google "django south". Even with south, you
need to know the SQL DDL in order to write the migrations.

Cheers

Tom
