The cause is that there's a problem with a line of code that interacts with the database, leaving the database connection dirty and unusable.
The error occurs not at that line of code, but at the next line of code which tries to use the database connection. The solution is to use pdb and/or logging to figure out where the problem is and fix it. It's probably easier to just step through with pdb.
