Thanks, but I already have Gmail as my mail email address and have been using Gmail for years. I use it with Outlook and POP3. I find that I rarely find time to look outside my Outlook inbox, so if it doesn't go through my Outlook inbox it sadly doesn't exist for me. I can only wish things were different, but it's probably that I try to do too many things. It's because we work differently. And I dislike Outlook too for many reasons, but have not found anything better for my needs. > I have a rule that puts all the messages from this list > into their own folder, which works great for me (I can > then archive that folder on a different schedule to my > other folders, and all the messages are grouped nicely > together). As I said abive, when I've done that in the past I never find the time to dig into all my folders. If I'm going to monitor a list, it needs to go through my inbox and have me take a manual action to move it to a folder. That's why I need a way to quickly use the "Advanced Find" feature. Periodically through the day I press Crtl-Shift-F and type in the [list header] which gives me a dynamic view of just that list, I can scroll back and forth through the message and when I'm done I can quickly copy all of them to the applicable folder. Unfortunately to search for the "To" using the Advanced Find it takes about six more clicks and navigation of a long multi-level flyout menu (and don't get me started on how pay a user interface those flyout menus are...) To me, that's mentally fatiguing to do 25 times a day and I find myself not wanting to do anything else after a day of that (I'm probably a good bit older -- 44 -- than most on the list, btw.) > Looking at the rules wizard, you could > "perform a custom action", "run a script", "flag message > with a colored flag" or "assign it to a specific > category" (among many other options), any of which sound > like they provide other ways of easily finding the > messages in this list. Only "run a script" would work, and my past experience trying to write code to work with Outlook has been and exercise in exasperation, i.e. bizarre object models, scripts being run sometimes and not others, virtually impossible to debug, as well as other problems. To make matters worse, that part of my Outlook is hosed and the script option button isn't working! > Of course if I'm searching for something that may have > been discussed on the list, I'll tend to go to the web > anyway because I know that the archive there is more > complete than the one on my local machine :-) The Lookout > search plugin for Outlook allows me to easily search > within a specific folder if I'm looking for something I > remember seeing. I used Lookout until it corrupted itself once to often so I moved to Windows desktop search, which is much more robust but sadly much slower. For searching online material, I generally search online too. My issues were not for searching but for monitoring the list. > As for the list itself, this is one of the most helpful > lists I've found. Very helpful, assuming one only asks for solutions to problems and not to have anything changed, right? (Sorry, I couldn't resist. ;-) Doug Van Horn > You should install this plugin for Firefox. Of course IE7 doesn't have Firebug or the Web Developer toolbar... > Seriously, though, I saw this discussion with 30 replies and > had to see what all the fuss was about. If I weren't so A.D.D. it might be different. :) > And I would argue emphatically against adding [django-users] > or any other redundant text to the subject line when there > are perfectly viable alternatives. It was quite a nice introduction to the list... :) </ asshole-mode> But I've found a workable solution (note the subject of my reply), so I can stay subscribed. I just know now not to ever ask for anything to be changed. ;-) -- -Mike Schinkel http://www.mikeschinkel.com/blogs/ http://www.welldesignedurls.org http://atlanta-web.org - http://t.oolicio.us --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Django users" group.
